Why Peter Dawson is so Thankful to be a Dentist

Dr. Peter Dawson

As the approaching holiday season signals the closing weeks of another year it seems to trigger that annual time for reflection on the things that are really important in our lives.  Isn’t it amazing that the things that are most important to us are those things that money can’t buy.
As my age brings me closer to thinking with an eternity perspective, I realize that the most important things in my life are really not “things”.  It is crystal clear what is most important to my happiness and contentment… it is summed up in one word, “relationships”.  Everything else takes a distant second place.
Would we choose more time at the office over the joy of a loving family relationship?  Those who make that choice pay too high a price for a mistaken idea of “success”.  Would our relationship with God take a back seat to anything else if we really believe he is real?

A wonderful thing about being a dentist is that it enables us to have a balanced life of service to our patients and still have time for love, play, worship and work as L.D. Pankey advocated in his cross of life.  The key word here is “balance”.

A balanced life takes a bit of planning but it is achievable if we give value to those important relationships with spouse, family and God.

Let me remind you of three important aids to a happy, balanced life as a dentist.
  1. Blue Time… Remember that your schedule controls your life.  Mark off “blue time” on your yearly calendar to save that time for family get-togethers.  Plan your daily work schedule to balance your life style.

  2. Learn principles of quality control… Learning these principles eliminates a tremendous amount of wasted, non-productive time, and allows a reasonable schedule of high productivity.

  3. Spend less than you make… avoid “things” that don’t contribute to long term satisfaction.

I think dentistry is the greatest hobby in the world.  It offers more rewards and satisfaction than any thing I can think of if we learn how to do it successfully with predictability.  It also rewards good practitioners and staff with wonderful relationships that endure.

This brings very best wishes for all the happiness that great relationships can bring your way during the Season and all year through.
